About the Program
The concept of emptiness in music appears to hold significant importance and may evoke associations with the indispensable "play of silence"—with essential rests, phrasal breaths, and suspensions that allow sounds abruptly cut off a moment ago to fully resonate. The music of the composers presented in this program, particularly Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, belongs to a hyper-expressive version of the Galant style known as Empfindsamkeit—a style of heightened sensibility. It is music that fascinates with extreme emotions and sudden mood shifts, distinguished by the presence of rhetorical pauses and expressive accents. In the philosophy of music of that period, it is precisely this "emptiness" (a pause, a sudden fading into silence) that gives meaning to sounds. C.P.E. Bach was a master of musical rhetoric of surprise—his compositions are filled with sudden, almost irrational rests and dynamic changes that construct the architecture of silence, perfectly capturing both fear of and fascination with the void. This allows Arte dei Suonatori to interpret silence not as an absence, but as a space essential for sound to exist. In its proximity, every single tone gains weight, becoming an event rather than merely a part of a stream of sounds.
The concert of the Early Music Festival – Persona Grata was co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund under the "Music" program implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance, as well as by the Self-Government of the Wielkopolska Region and the Poznań City Hall.
